Join us for the second Walk in the Dark 2012. This year the walks will take place between 20th to 28th October.
Walk in the Dark is all about safety at night, when you're out walking your dogs in towns, fields or country lanes. Road accidents involving dogs increase significantly during the darker hours of the winter months and this is often due to the fact that the dog and their owner are not visible enough to motorists.
Reflective clothing is helpful, but keep in mind that you and your dog are still only visible once a light source (ie. car headlights) reflects back off your clothing. We therefore recommend that you carry a torch and that your dog wears an LED light collar that can be seen at a far distance. This is why Walk in the Dark is sponsored by the Leuchtie LED light collar, which is super bright and waterproof.
As the days get shorter, we encourage the public to organise walks in the dark during the week 20-28 October in their local area to raise awareness and educate owners about safety in low light conditions and how to make yourself and your dog visible to others. A pedestrian without a dog could easily be frightened by an invisible dog emerging out of the dark, and this in return can cause the dog to react. This is another good reason to be highly visible after dark.
Walk in the Dark events lend themselves to fundraise for charities or a good cause. Last year our chosen charity was Medical Detections Dogs. This year we have chosen to support Search & Rescue Dogs. Collarways, our sponsors, have a close relationship with Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs, who have chosen the Leuchtie LED collar as their preferred high visibility gear for their search dogs.
“Several of us use the Leuchtie Premium to help us keep track of our dogs at night. It is really important that we can see where our dogs are when we are searching in the dark. The Leuchtie Premium is the best value for money, brightest, waterproof collar we have found.” Judith Oak, Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs
So join us this October by organising your own walk in your area, joining a walk somebody else is organising, buying a Leuchtie LED collar for your dog using the Walk in the Dark Voucher or simply by spreading the word through Twitter and Facebook.
Walk in the Dark is sponsored by Collarways and the Leuchtie LED light collar for dogs.
